Shared Value: Why Business Models Matter
Michael Sheridan is the Director of Sourcing and Shared Value at Intelligentsia Coffee. In that role, he leads the company’s Direct Trade program and a team of nine green coffee buyers sourcing coffee from more than 50 supply chain partners in 15 countries, while serving as Intelligentsia’s green coffee buyer for Bolivia, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Michael also orchestrates the Extraordinary Coffee Workshop (ECW), an annual supply chain summit that convenes Intelligentsia’s Direct Trade partners from around the world in a different coffee origin for an in-depth exploration of everything that makes coffee extraordinary. He has also worked with partners in the public and non-profit sectors to develop ECWx, a spin-off event designed to promote smallholder inclusion in the specialty coffee marketplace.

Prior to joining Intelligentsia, Michael led coffee programming for the international development agency CRS for more than a decade. For most of that time, he lived in Central and South America where he managed project teams in six countries and advocated for smallholder coffee growers and coffee farm workers on the CRS coffeelandsblog.

Michael is a member of the SCA’s Sustainability Center Advisory Council, and has served as a volunteer advisor to the industry on sustainability issues since 2012. He is also an award-winning writer whose work on smallholder farmers and farmworkers has appeared in Fresh Cup Magazine, Roast Magazine, the Specialty Coffee Chronicle and other coffee publications. Michael has addressed industry leaders on issues of sourcing and social impact at leading food and beverage industry events since 2010, including Re:co Symposium, Specialty Coffee Association Expo, SCA Avance, Let’s Talk Coffee, Nordic Roasters Forum, East Coast Coffee Madness, the First International Coffee Leaf Rust Summit, and the Sustainable Food Lab Annual Leadership Summit. This is his first appearance at the World Coffee Leaders Forum.
